Personal, political, and legal papers, deeds, land plans, diaries, accounts, and receipts, chiefly relating to Duncan's daily life and his career, particularly his duties as state representative and senator (1837-1838) and U.S. representative from Massachusetts (1848-1856); family correspondence and civic papers, documenting his activities with Brown University (Providence, R.I.) Board of Fellows, American Baptist Missionary Union, and Essex Agricultural Society; political correspondence, chiefly comprised of letters from politicians John Varnum (Haverhill, Mass.) and Leverett Saltonstall (Salem, Mass.), and from constituents, presenting local opinions on the national issues of slavery and secession; legal business papers, including deeds to lands in Haverhill, documentation of the construction of a bridge in Haverhill, and notes pertaining to various railroads; family papers, including papers of members of the White and Willis families in Haverhill; and papers of Duncan's daughter, Mary (Duncan) Harris, containing correspondence with missionaries in Japan and Turkey.

Probably a native of Ireland, Duncan enlisted in an Illinois infantry regiment (possibly the 80th) that was organizing at Centralia, Illinois in August 1862. If this is the correct James Duncan, he died November 8, 1862 in Louisville, Kentucky. His parents were James and Mary Ann Duncan, Irish natives, who lived in Perry County, Illinois in 1870 and 1880.
